Can You Choose Standard or High Yield?
Often, yes. You can choose standard or high-yield toner only when HP lists both for your exact printer. For example, a North American LaserJet Pro M404dn can use either HP 58A standard-yield toner or HP 58X high-yield toner.
The final letter does not create a universal rule. HP 81X fits the M605 and M606 families, but HP lists the standard 81A for the M604 as well. Similar numbers can also belong to different regions.

How to Confirm the Right HP Cartridge
Find the complete printer model. Check the front label, settings screen, or product label. M404dn and M403dn are different printers.
Match the sales region. This page uses U.S. and Canadian cartridge numbers. HP may assign another number to the same printer family elsewhere.
Check the cartridge family. Match both the short name, such as 58X, and the part number, such as CF258X.
Choose the supported yield. Standard and high-yield versions are interchangeable only when HP lists both for the model.
Confirm color requirements. Color laser printers use separate black, cyan, magenta, and yellow cartridges. A set includes all four colors.

Toner and ink cartridges cannot be substituted for each other, even when the product numbers look similar.
Within toner families, an A version often identifies standard yield and an X version often identifies high yield. This pattern is common, not universal. Always use the printer's supported-supplies list as the final check.
Original vs. Compatible HP Toner
Compatibility and brand are separate questions. First identify the correct cartridge number. Then decide whether to buy an original HP cartridge or a third-party version made for that number.
Are HP cartridges with similar numbers interchangeable?
No. A similar number or cartridge shape does not confirm compatibility. Match the exact printer model, cartridge family, part number, and sales region.
Can I replace an HP A cartridge with the X version?
Only when HP lists both versions for your printer. When supported, the X cartridge usually fits the same printer and provides a higher declared yield.
Why does HP list a different cartridge number in another country?
Many HP cartridges are regionalized. The same printer family may use different cartridge numbers in North America, Europe, Latin America, or Asia Pacific.
